History
In the last two decades many hospitals around the world were facing a crisis because of a nursing shortage. Penang Adventist Hospital (PAH) was no exception and as such the leadership had been endeavoring for a number of years to obtain approval from the Malaysian government to establish a nursing school. Approval was finally obtained in October 1992 and in September 1993 PAH opened the Adventist College of Nursing (ACON) offering a three-year diploma in nursing. In September 1994, ACON offered the 15-month conversion program to convert the existing nursing aides to assistant nurses (AN). Three batches of assistant nurses were trained. Thereafter, the conversion program was stopped and replaced by the 24-month Assistant Nurse Certificate Course which started in January 1998. Since then the college has been committed to educating knowledgeable, competent, and compassionate nursing professionals for more than a decade. There are more than 600 alumni employed in a variety of health care settings throughout the country as well as abroad. With the educational programs, a long-standing tradition of providing quality health care education continues.
The ACON was first located in a four-story building, the Adventist Court, across the road from the Hospital. In November 1998 the College was relocated to a six-story building on the hospital compound.
The strength of the institution lies in its ability to continue expanding and because of the strong commitment to develop qualified and compassionate nurses, in July 2010 the ACON vacated the building where it resided for over the past 12 years and moved across the street again to an expanded area that will continue to allow for growth and the addition of health science programs in the future. At about the same time an action was taken to change the name of the college from Adventist College of Nursing (ACON) to Adventist College of Nursing and Health Sciences (ACNHS) with the approval of the government and the anticipation of establishing additional Health Science programs of study. The ACNHS, now located in a rented large seventh floor of a commercial building across the street from the hospital, has more classrooms, a larger space for the library, skills lab and computer laboratory, and additional space for faculty and staff offices.
