AUCA History
The Adventist University of Central Africa was first established in north western Rwanda in 1978 to serve the Francophone constituency of the then Africa-Indian Ocean Division. The institution grew and served well, but had to be closed in 1994 when war erupted in the country. Two years later, higher education in the Division was reorganized into four campuses across the Division, with a central administrative headquarters at the Division.
One such campus was developed at Kigali, Rwanda, but soon became an independent center of higher education for Rwanda. Its request to the government to be allowed to function under the 1988 charter, regaining the original title “ Adventist University of Central Africa,†was granted.
Currently the university has students from 5 countries, including Rwanda. The main facilities (Masoro campus) are housed in a newly completed structure with adequate facilities, a few miles from the international airport. Gishushu campus, not far from the main campus, also operates since 2014. Because of the government decree to move from French to English as the official language of the country, the university is taking steps for the transition. The transition has its challenges, but the university has already adopted English as the medium of instruction, and is taking steps to implement the transition with steady progress by providing the needed facilities.
